In this guide, we'll explore the process of licensing a remote desktop server (terminal server) and configuring it for RDP connectivity. These steps are applicable to Windows Server 2012, 2016, 2019, and 2022 versions.
1) Begin by adding the necessary remote desktop services and roles if they haven't been installed yet. Access Active Directory => Add roles and features => Select the desired server.
Next, include the "Remote Desktop Services" role and the "Remote Desktop Licensing" role service. Additionally, you may install "Remote Desktop Gateway," "Remote Desktop Session Host," and "Remote Desktop Connection Broker" if needed.
Install the services and restart the server.
2) The next step involves configuring the group policy. To access the configuration, use the "Search" function on the toolbar => gpedit.msc
Navigate to Computer Configuration => Administrative Templates => Windows Components => Remote Desktop Services => Remote Desktop Session Host => Licensing.
Under the "Use the specified remote desktop license servers" menu, enter your server's name or IP address in the provided field. Be sure to enter the correct server name.
Proceed to the "Set the remote desktop licensing mode" menu and select either "Per user" or "Per device" from the drop-down menu, depending on your license type.
3) Now, you can proceed with the licensing process itself. Return to Active Directory => Remote Desktop Services => Remote Desktop Licensing Manager.
Right-click on your server => Activate server.
Follow the "Activate Server Wizard."
Opt for the recommended "Automatic" connection method.
Optionally, provide your first and last name, organization name, and country where the server is located. Note that verification is not required for these fields, so any data can be entered.
Once registered, proceed with the licensing. For terminal server licensing, you will need an activation key called RDS CAL. In this case, we will be using the "Per device" licensing, which allows 50 devices (clients) to connect to the server via RDP.
You can purchase activation keys for "Per user" or "Per device" licensing from our online store, ensuring compatibility with your version of Windows Server. For further details, refer to the Windows Server RDS CAL directory on the next page.
During the licensing process, select "License Pack (Retail)" => Next.
Enter the activation key. You can purchase an RDP key in our store.
Click "Next."
Finish the process!
Afterward, return to the remote desktop licensing manager to verify if the server has been successfully activated. If it is activated, everything was carried out successfully.
